What do you love about Art Clay??
I
find it exciting to be working
in a relatively new medium where
we are all exploring its
creative possibilities. I'm
aware that some metalsmiths view
metal clay with suspicion,
thinking that this medium is not
suitable for the serious
artisan. I disagree. I think
it adds another color to the
palette of wonderful materials
the artist can use to produce
sophisticated work that
expresses a personal vision.

What are your favorite Art Clay
projects/creations?
Mostly I find that my favorite
project is the one I've finished
most recently. I like to make
one-of-a-kind pieces so, for
me, each project has its own
learning curve, its own
challenges. There's a certain
sense of adventure when I begin
something new. There's also a
great sense of accomplishment
when I figure out how to meet
each challenge. I love those
feelings. Of course, if I'm on
deadline, there's also a little
voice in my head whispering,
"don't mess it up, don't mess it
up."

What other media do you work
and/or teach in? I
particularly enjoy combining
traditional metalsmithing
techniques and materials with
Art Clay. Other media I've
explored in the context of metal
clay include beadwork, felting
and other fiber arts, glass and
polymer clay.

Biography:
I've loved to read since I was
tiny and always thought that I'd
wind up writing for a living. To
that end, I earned my BA in
English and American Literature
from Hunter College in New York
City. In 1994, I experienced a
radical change in plans
when Vanessa Raffi Backer
dragged me to a class devoted
to embellishing fabric with
beads and silk ribbon.
I discovered that I love working
with my hands! I'd always had a
passion for small, shiny
objects, so I became obsessed
with beads and beadwork. In
1999, I made my first bead
of Art Clay Silver and knew this
would be a primary medium for
me. It's been a great adventure
since then. I've taught Art
Clay for five years at
several venues in California.
I've also taught several
collaborative workshops with
noted bead artist Marcie Stone
in France, Santa Fe, NM, and San
Diego. In July 2007, I'll be
teaching a weekend Art Clay
workshop at the Idyllwild Arts
Summer Program.

Philosophy:
Making connections is an
important focus of my life
and work. I love sharing my
excitement about the
possibilities inherent in
metal clay. It gives me a
wonderful sense of
satisfaction to help
workshop students express
their own voices in this
versatile medium. Being
part of a creative community
is essential for me. I also
love making connections
between various media and
between words and
artifacts. Working with my
hands connects me to others,
to the universe, to myself.
It is the most potent form
of meditation for me
