What do you love about Art Clay??
I love the idea of taking a lump
of clay and exploring the
possibilities within. The
new products both intimidate me
and excite me... stay tuned.

What are your favorite Art Clay
projects/creations?
My favorite Art Clay Silver
project is always the one I just
completed, followed by the one
on the drawing board. I am
really enjoying the "weeds and
seeds" collection of things from
my back yard. The
alternate title is "Ode to
things never planted" and
features wild strawberry leaves.

What other media do you work
and/or teach in?
As a serial crafter, I have made
porcelain dolls, quilted a
thousand piece Christening Quilt
in values of white and cream,
have done ribbon embroidery and
anything you can think of
involving yarn and/or glue.
Teaching remains part of my real
life career as a Certified
Registered Nurse Anesthetist and
I primarily lecture in airway
management to nurses and
physicians and have been a guest
lecturer at the Pennsylvania
Society of Anesthesiologists
annual meeting.

Biography:
At 16 I decided to put art aside
in favor of nursing and had to
receive a waiver to both enter
and eventually take my exams to
be an RN. At 20 I was
commissioned as a Lieutenant in
the Army Nurse Corps. At
24, my classmates and I became
pioneers and among the first
nurses in the country to receive
a degree in anesthesia. I
have been fortunate to have
never regretted my choices.
I had supportive parents and
grandparents who had me totally
convinced I could do anything
with the right amount of effort. I met Ed Hatfield
on a radio talk show for singles
(way before computer dating),
and after eight years we rushed
into marriage. It has been
a wonderful adventure that has
expanded the artistic side of
both of us as well as our
waistlines. Ed is the
supportive encouraging husband
every woman hopes to find.
Mom wants you to know that any
talent came from her!

Philosophy: Wow,
limiting me to a 300 word
philosophy is rough. I
think we should be kind to
each other; if you are going
out of your way it should be
to help someone, not to hurt
them. Extremes in any
direction bother me, even if
it is the direction I have
chosen for myself.
Flexibility and openness are
important because without
both you might miss a truth
that you hadn't seen before.
Learning is a process that
should continue throughout
life and love is eternal.
And, you should never do
anything you wouldn't do if
your parents were in the
room.

Awards:
My award from Art Clay was
followed by a First Place in
the semi-precious briolette
category for a necklace
featuring tourmaline drops
as well as Art Clay
strawberry leaf stations. I
also placed as a finalist
for a free form peyote
bracelet with a center drusy
cabochon surrounded by seed
beads and pearls. Fire
Mountain Gems and Beads gave
those awards. My head is
still spinning.
