What do you love about Art Clay??
The versatility. It is almost
like alchemy, being able to
shape a simple lump of clay into
a fabulous piece of jewelry, and
then fire it, “turning” it into
silver. I can set stones, glass,
work on pieces as much or as
little as I want at a time, and
even add to a finished piece
easily. I also like that as
clay, there are so many
techniques you can employ that
are difficult, if not
impossible, in traditional
silversmithing. |

What are your favorite Art Clay
projects/creations?
Of the standard projects, the
simplicity of the stamped
pendants and coating objects
with silver paste is still very
fulfilling. I also really like
rings, as the process is calming
to me. Of my own projects, I
have been working on several
unique pieces, seeing how
various elements come together
and what I can accomplish using
a variety of materials in one
piece.

What other media do you work
and/or teach in?
I work in whatever media is
needed for a project. This has
led me on many journeys to learn
new materials, from clay and
wax, though wood, leather,
metals, glass, plastics, and
plaster. |

Biography:
Scott Cover, a senior instructor
for Art Clay Silver, also
sculpts chess sets, gargoyles,
and other creations from clay,
wood, glass, and metal. A native
of the Midwest, Scott began to
experiment with art at an early
age, making his mother a
dinosaur for her garden in third
grade.
He continued to sculpt and draw,
especially dragons and fantasy
themes, which quickly led to
painting pewter miniatures and
making scenery to go with
gaming. His interest in gaming
also led him to create his own
chessboards, chess pieces, and
create several incarnations of
chess set themes. Today, Scott
is a sculptor who works with a
couple of Sci-Fi / gaming
conventions, and also has had
work featured in a mainstream
haunted house. |

Philosophy:
As an artist, I see
potential and beauty in the
world around me. I am
inspired by what I see and
continue the process of
creation in my mind, further
shaping and making the
vision my own. My goal is to
try and emulate, if not
actually capture, a little
of that beauty and at the
same time try and give a
small bit of what I see back
to the world. While I can
draw well enough to get my
ideas across, it is
sculpting in three
dimensions that allows me to
make my imagination become
reality. I enjoy melding
different items and
materials into a single
piece, experimenting with
form and structure. In
working with my visions, I
have utilized leather,
glass, metals, gems,
plastics, plasters, and
clays, among other things,
to make them real.
But creating is not enough.
Being able to fan the spark
of creativity in others is
in itself an act of
creation, and perhaps the
most important one, as it
allows art to be seen by
another pair of eyes and
interpreted through another
mind. To this end, I enjoy
teaching others what I am
doing and help them realize
their potential. The name of my company is
Algedonic Arts. Algedonic is
a term that means “pleasure
out of pain". It is this
idea that encapsulates art
for me. The process of
creation is often painful,
but from that pain, beauty
and pleasure are born. |
