Artist Of The Month - May 2008
Biography: I have shared my love for metal by teaching it to others since 1978. I have been teaching jewelry–making and metalsmithing to adults thorugh the San Deigo Community College District Continuing Education program for over 25 years and through Saddleback College for five years. Students attend weekly sessions on an ongoing basis. Their desire to continually learn new skills and techniques expands my experience as an artist. Students have won awards for their work and many have sold work that they have produced in my class. Several students have gone on to professional careers in the jewelry industry. For the past two summers, I have taught weeklong sessions at Idyllwild School of the Arts Summer Program, covering many specialty metal techniques. |
Philosophy: I have been designing and making metal objects and jewelry since 1975. For several years, I desgined, manufactured and sold a line of high fashion jewelry. Therough this experience, I learned about marketing, small-scale production and the fashion industry. During this time, my family was growing and we bought a home. When I began to look for lighting and other accessories for my home, I was not pleased with what was available. My desire to live with functional art and the absence of wonderfully designed, well-made home accessories in the marketplace led me to create the items I wanted for my home. I believe that living with art enhances our lives and that art, which can be used to meet a functional need as well as making an aesthetic statement, is very easy to live with. I have discovered that I am not alone in having a desire to live with functional art. I have expanded this line of work and developed it into a line of functional art for the home and office, which I call: "Enchancements". It includes lighting tableware, cabinet hardware, small scultpure, wall sconces, candlestands, and desk accessories. |
