What do you love about Art Clay?
Art Clay provides me with a medium that allow for unlimited design possibilities.
What are your favorite Art Clay projects/creations?
My favorite projects are those that challenge me artistically. These usually result from a client’s request for a custom piece. The client has the idea and from their idea I develop the design, then turn that design into a miniature piece of art.
What other media do you work and/or teach in?
Other than Art Clay, my primary media are fused glass and lamp–worked beads. I also work with enamels on metals and fabricate in sterling silver and other metals – sawing, filing and soldering. And I enjoy drawing and other paper arts. My teaching schedule includes a variety of classes in Art Clay Silver, fused glass, and basic jewelry making. I try to offer a fairly extensive schedule of classes at my studio and at other sites in central Indiana, as well as creating customized classes upon request.
Biography:
I have been interested in art since childhood and have taken art classes in various media, including glass bead–making, silversmithing, drawing, painting, woodcarving, and many others. Then in 1997 I took a silver clay class and a glass fusing class. At that point I realized I could use all of my various artistic talents to make jewelry. I have continued to take a variety of jewelry–making classes, finally becoming an Art Clay World Senior instructor in 2003.

For several years I was a part–time jewelry artist and a full–time corporate employee. This year, I left the corporate world and now I can focus full–time on creating unique glass and fine silver jewelry at my studio, which is part of the Studio School & Gallery in historic Irvington on Indianapolis’ eastside.

In addition to creating jewelry, I really enjoy teaching others to create jewelry. I am spending a lot of time teaching classes in basic jewelry–making, glass fusing and silver clay. I teach classes at my studio and various other sites in central Indiana. I promote my jewelry and classes under the name "Magickal Dragon Designs". The name came about because I think that shaping glass and silver with fire is a magical process –– and isn’t a dragon the perfect source of magical fire?
Philosophy:
Art takes many forms. In the form of jewelry, it becomes miniature sculpture. My art works use silver clay as the basis, and I combine the silver clay with other precious metals, semi–precious stones, fused glass and lamp–worked beads to create the finished piece. I find inspiration for these pieces all around me in the natural world, at museums, in old buildings and in high tech gadgets. And sometimes the inspiration comes from the plasticity and adaptability of the clay itself. Whatever the source of inspiration, I want each piece to be art jewelry that the owner will be proud to wear and display.
