Origami Certification with Katie Baum

December 12 - 15, 2019
Time: 9 am to 6 pm daily
Location: 9420 W. Picture Rocks Road, Tucson, AZ 85743

Description: Art Clay Master Instructor Katie Baum is proud to offer the first ever Art Clay World USA Origami Certification, graciously hosted by new Master Instructor Lyle Rayfield!

Origami, derived from the Japanese words “ori” (meaning fold) and “gami” (meaning paper), has been a cherished hobby in Japan for hundreds of years. While metal clay artists have been creating fine silver origami for over a decade, there had been no official mastery-level course combining Art Clay Silver and traditional Japanese origami until now. This detailed and rather intense Origami Certification covers an incredible variety of origami techniques across six stunning projects, each incorporating a different and unique combination of origami folds and Art Clay Silver formulas. Art Clay Origami Certification also introduces artists to two new experiences: using Art Clay Paper Type PLUS, and creating origami pieces using curved-line folds.

Our projects include two rings, three pendants, and one brooch; we create these using Art Clay Silver clay, silver paste, silver syringe, Paper Type, and Paper Type PLUS. While a number of techniques overlap with things learned during Level 1 Certification (such as drilling holes, shaping clay, proper finding embedment, and mounting pearls,) there are also a number of skills introduced for the first time. Two different styles of ring band are required: a half-round ring and a channel-band ring. We add another style of gem-setting to our repertoire, learning to create a step bezel, which looks and functions like a tube setting. We investigate the aesthetic of negative space, create interpretations of nature, and fold our way to dimensional but light jewelry.

Art Clay Silver Origami Certification is intended for artists who are both familiar with origami (familiar with types of folds, able to read/understand an origami pattern diagram, etc) and already Art Clay Certified Instructors. Will Origami be new to you? We’ve got you covered! The day before the Origami Certification begins, we are offering an Intro to Art Clay Origami to help bridge the gaps and get our North American artists more origami-savvy. Artists unfamiliar with origami are strongly urged to take the Intro to Art Clay Origami workshop!!!

Cost of Certification is $650 and includes all materials and lunch daily. (Please alert us of any necessary dietary restrictions.) Must pay at least 50% at time of registration, final amount due by 11/10/2019. All tools will be provided, students do not need to pack/bring tools.

Registration opens September 1, 2019.

Cancellation Policy:
Full refund before 10/14/2019 in the form of ACW credit only. After 10/15/2019, only 50% refund in the form of store credit. No refunds of any kind after 11/14/2019.

I’m so excited about the upcoming Origami Certification!  We visited these techniques at last year’s Instructor Intensive.  They definitely add a whole new dimension to the way that I approach designing new projects. The new thicker Paper Type Plus is amazing!
