Biography:
Marilyn has been designing and creating wearable art for over 20 years. Her discovery of metal clay in 2003 created a new passion for a unique medium and has changed her method of creating and designing. As she has traveled the world with her family on her sailboat visiting over 70 countries, she collected artifacts from the ocean and exotic places and now incorporates them into her designs. She started her career as a teacher in the sciences and along with her love of the sea and her experiences in learning about the various cultures of the islands, she has infused this knowledge into her tropically themed creations. Her teaching experiences have led to her to have the pleasure of passing on her knowledge of the magical metal clay to her students.
For the last 8 years she has held workshops for students in the Virgin Islands in Art Clay silver and Copper and has her own designs in several galleries throughout the Caribbean islands.
With a new move to Florida and a new larger studio, she is looking forward to continuing the introduction to new students the magic of the metal clays.
She is certified in both PMC and Art Clay.
Artist Philosophy:
I learned about this unique malleable form of metal in 2002 and it is become my passion. It is a medium that has unlimited possibilities for the artist, as well as it is easy enough for a beginner to work with. After traveling the world and designing pieces from items I collected along the way, I returned to the USA and continued designing jewelry. I had learned to fabricate my own findings as they add so much value to a piece but they were time consuming to make. When I heard about this new silver metal clay, I bought some and started experimenting and fell in love with it. I then signed up for a week at the William Holland Lapidary School in 2003, where I became certified in PMC. In the last 10 years I have also received my Art Clay certifications and taught students in the Virgin Islands the magic of Art Clay silver and her new sister Art Clay Copper. I have now relocated to Florida and I have set up my new studio, where I am continuing my workshops and certifying new students as more of a full time profession. I am also constantly exploring and using of other techniques in conjunction with metal clay like fused glass, enamels, mixed metals, and wirework.
